Medical researchers are investing significant time and resources to study the advantages of marijuana treatments. In a recent study, two cannabis components have been found to have a significant effect on the size of cancerous tumors in the brain. The treatment is especially effective when combined with radiotherapy, according to researchers.

According to representatives from the study, the combination of marijuana treatment and radiation can effectively make tumor growths “disappear.”

While the pronouncement may overstate the effects, it should raise hopes for medical researchers, doctors, patients and their families. The research was conducted by cancer specialists at St. Georges University of London. The study was published in the Molecular Cancer Therapeutics Journal.

According to the findings, there are 85 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. The two cannabinoids that have been shown to have a positive effect on tumors are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). The researchers combined the two cannabinoids with radiotherapy treatment and published their results. According to the study, combining the cannabinoids with radiotherapy can have a “drastic” effect on tumors.

Brain cancer is an aggressive deadly disease that impacts patients and their families across the globe. According to the researchers, brain cancer killed 5,200 British people in 2012. Medical researchers have pursued various treatment options to reduce the size of tumors and to increase the lifespan of individuals who have been diagnosed with having brain tumors. Based on initial findings in the study, tests involving THC and CBD which were carried out on lab mice and showed that cancerous growths slowed down after using radiation combined with cannabinoids.

Researchers and other medical experts worldwide have found the results of the study to be exciting and potentially groundbreaking. In the study, tumors were treated in a variety of ways to gauge effectiveness. Some tumors were not treated at all, others were treated with cannabinoids alone, some with irradiation alone, and others with the combination. Based on findings, the most optimal treatment combined cannabinoids with radiation therapy. Researchers had previously known that the cannabinoids could have beneficial effects, but combining the treatment with radiation is a new approach. According to medical researchers, the new treatment proves promising, especially for patients who are in a grave and serious situation involving brain tumors.

While there have not yet been human trials, they are currently being considered by the research team. The overall impact of THC has not yet proved consistently positive and researchers are continuing tests on treating grey matter versus white matter in the brain. Initial results have shown an increase in the neurological connections and function that could be compensating for the loss of gray matter in the result of a tumor.

California has legalized the use of medical marijuana. Whether you are a dispensary owner or card holder, it is important to maintain adequate knowledge of new developments, in addition to the status of your rights and responsibilities. Our Orange County medical marijuana attorneys are experienced with compliance issues and can also help you protect your rights in the event of a criminal investigation.
Migrants seeking work have continued to descend upon Humboldt County to work at the center of the marijuana industry in California. The workers come from all over the world and take part in the marijuana harvest as “trimmers.” <a href="http://www.npr.org/2014/12/04/368440223/with-harvest-season-trimmigrants-flock-to-californias-pot-capital" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"">According to an NPR report, “trimmers” are responsible for manicuring the buds so that they are prepared for the market. Locals refer to the harvesters as “trimmigrants.”

To understand the importance of trimming, it is critical to understand how marijuana plants grow. Marijuana grows like a bush and produces a flower or “marijuana bud.” A trimmer is responsible for trimming the leaves and stems and shaping the marijuana buds. The process is part function, part aesthetic, as sellers want to make their weed stand out when it is sold at medical marijuana dispensaries or on the black market.
It is estimated that there are over 100,000 plants growing in the Humboldt County area and all must be harvested and processed in the same short period of time. Proper harvest prevents the plants from getting moldy and deterioration. The harvest season begins in September and extends through the month of November, the busiest time for those looking to work as trimmer. Trimmers are both men and women, many bring their backpacks and their pets, to enjoy the culture and the work afforded during the short time in Humboldt.

Trimming is considered an illegal operation so any of the workers who are caught could be charged with a drug crime. Another problem is that there is a shortage of housing, not just for those who come to work, but for those who are unable to find work. For those who do find work, the pay can be good. Trimmers are paid by the pound and those who know what to do and work quickly can make up to $500 in a day. Of course, they are also paid in cash and under the table, so the wage is also tax-free. The job also comes with risk, because all trimmers could wind up in jail if the site gets busted.

Locals have complained about the attraction of migrant trimmers because many of the drifters have nowhere to stay. They are obstructing many businesses on the streets and creating squatter camps that have damaged the river. Law enforcement officers have pointed out that the majority of growing that happens in the county is illegal so hiring drifters also puts the operators at risk. There have also been reports that the trimmers have been killed or gone missing while working in remote areas.

Marijuana growing is a complicated business in California and can result in drug charges. If you were arrested while trimming at a grow operation or you are facing other marijuana drug charges, our Orange County marijuana lawyers can help. We are experienced in the investigation of drug crimes and will take a strategic approach to protect your rights, defeat or minimize your charges, and work to keep you out of jail.

One of the leading arguments for legalization of recreational marijuana use is the potential for state and federal tax revenues. According to recent reports, if all states moved to legalize marijuana for recreational use, they could be collecting over $3 billion per year in tax revenues. The NerdWallet report projected a total of $3.1 billion per year. Of all the states, California is forecasted to benefit the most from recreational use legalization. According to their projections, California could rake in more than $519 million per year through recreational use marijuana taxation.

Whether you are pro-legalization, a medical marijuana card holder, or marijuana dispensary owner, it is important to understand the potential tax benefits and regulatory changes that could take place in the state of California. Our Orange County marijuana dispensary attorneys are committed to staying abreast of all legal chances and in providing strategic and committed advocacy to California residents. In addition to helping individuals and businesses ensure compliance with the law, we are also abreast of regulatory changes and can represent clients who are under investigation or charged in a criminal matter.

In addition to California, other states would stand to significantly benefit from legalization, according to the report. Seven states would accrue an additional $100 million in tax revenues and another 25 states could potentially take in another $20 million per year. The NerdWallet analysis estimated a flat tax on recreational marijuana (15%) which is equivalent to the current taxation rate in Colorado. The projections also included additional state and local taxes when calculating their figures. In addition to tax revenue, states will also benefit from medical marijuana sales revenues and the reduced spending for drug crime enforcement.

The NerdWallet analysis estimated sales in each state using national surveys that calculate use of marijuana in each state. The national studies determines the number of consumers over the age of 25. The analysis used these figures to estimate the number of pot users in each state and then applied these numerical values to the total U.S. population. According to reports, the U.S. marijuana market is estimated at $14 billion which could mean a significant windfall for states if they are able to capitalize.

Though states are likely to tax marijuana differently, the figures project significant tax revenues in California and nationwide. Colorado has already seen a significant revenue boost, though the numbers are lower than initially projected. If other states continue to legalize medical marijuana use and recreational use, the U.S. marijuana industry is likely to reach $8 billion to $10 billion in legal sales by the year 2018. Only two states (Colorado and Washington) have legalized recreational use, but 23 have legalized medicinal marijuana. Oregon and Alaska will vote on legalization in November. Florida voters will vote on medical marijuana use this fall.

As marijuana laws continue to change at the local, state, and federal levels, individuals and businesses should stay abreast of their rights as well as legal obligations. An experienced advocate can keep you informed while also preventing state or federal criminal liability.
